"At any one time, one in six people has a common mental health problem, such as an anxiety disorder or depression, and one in 100 has a severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Six million people in the UK have an anxiety disorder and/or depression. Mental health problems cost the country an estimated £77billion a year in healthcare, benefits and lost productivity. The Department of Health is working to ensure that people look after their mental health and can receive high-quality, personalised support if they need it." Source: NHS England www.nhs.uk
The recently published National Mental Health Strategy (February 2011) puts mental health firmly at the centre of the drive to improve public health and wellbeing. Funding is being increased to provide greater access to talking therapies, a key tool to recovery. Schools, employers, local authorities, health professionals and the community all have a role to play in creating a society that fully enjoys the benefits of good mental health and wellbeing.
This half-day briefing focuses on some of emerging themes and practical implications of activating the strategy.
